ALTERNATIVES TO POLICING: HOW U.S. CITIES ARE ADVANCING COMMUNITY SAFETY BY TAKING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

Community development

In partnership with Reimagine Richmond, and Movimiento Poder, we released the Alternatives to Policing: How U.S. Cities Are Advancing Community Safety by Taking a Multidisciplinary Approach report which aims to support efforts to address the massive disconnect between what residents need from their public safety systems and what they receive.

This report, a follow-up to Criminalization vs. Care: How the 20 Largest U.S. Cities Invest Their Resources, argues the need for the replacement of our current systems of mass criminalization and incarceration with “systems of community care” rooted in wellness and equity.

Most Chicago 911 Calls Don’t Need Urgent Police Response, Report Shows

In response to the release of the Alternatives to Policing: How U.S. Cities Are Advancing Community Safety by Taking a Multidisciplinary Approach report, Communities United Leader and Board President Roxanne Smith courageously spoke with Block Club Chicago Reporter Rachel Hinton to share about her family’s experience with generational violence at the hands of the Chicago Police Department and the road toward policing alternatives in Chicago.

Advocates provide bikes to migrants, request help from CDOT to meet growing demand

Joel Campbell, program coordinator of Bikes N’ Roses, says his Belmont Cragin-based shop has sent out about 20 bikes and is storing another 30 in various stages of repair. About 20 volunteers have rotated through BN’R, helping to fix up bikes that have been matched with recipients. Similar efforts are taking place at Working Bikes in Pilsen and West Town Bikes in Humboldt Park.
